Latest 24...

Where is this season going?

My sneaking suspicion is that this whole thing with the nukes is going to run out of steam very fast. The plot will take a major change and the whole issue concerning the nukes will be forgotten. There is a connection between the people who had Jack abducted and the nuclear threat. The connection is his father. After the next couple of episodes, we will be on this plot line.

Mark my words.

Regarding this latest episode...

1) There is a paved airport in the middle of the desert? They even had the runway heading (61) at the end of it!!! Wouldn't that be a keen place to start your search when looking for airborne drones?

2) The pilot of the drone is three blocks from CTU? Who planned this operation?

3) I like Silverspoon more and more, especially after that crack about Milo wanting to get in Nadia's pants. He tells it like it is and does not hold punches because, dammit, there are three nukes ready to go off. I wouldn't mind a spin off with that character.

4) Regarding Nadia... they will take us down the usual "she isn't... is she? She IS... no, she is not." route and, by the end, she will be back at her post.
5) The VP is laughable. No one could take the position he is taking and be serious. To call a cracked suitcase nuke a "dirty bomb" is, well, laughable. I like the warden from Shawshank as the SecDef though. I think we will be seeing more of him.

Runway in the desert, so funny.

You missed the best line of the night.

Audrey thought I was worth rescuing, I will finish this and then I will take care of them. Watch out, Jack is headed to China, 24 the Movie.

Audrey alive or dead? I have no clue. But once again, Jack decides is personal family issue is more important, get me that file Chloe.

Chloe kissing Morris, classic

You knew that CTU had a security leak right? I mean really, as soon as Milo gave her the clearance you knew Nadia or Milo was a mole. Because if it is the fifth crew member going to the planet I will be pissed. I say Milo is a mole. I do not care if I am wrong.

Whitehouse, struggle to convince the sister to wake up Wayne Palmer, but I have a hard time believing he can be declared competent to overrule the VEEP, I think the desert of unnamed Arab country is getting toasted.

Jack just shoots the first guy coming out of the substation. Good thing it wasn't just Local Fox 12's service tech headed to the van.

Three blocks from CTU, classic. Just too funny.

Where is the radiation exposure coming from? I do not mean to be flip about it but the bomb breaks and the nuclear fuel is exposed but don't you need the fuel to be disperesed to kill the first responders? It seems to me the release of radioactive material requires a wide dispersal to give fatal doses of radiation, I am just shooting from the hip here, basing it on the radioactive steam venting from the nuclear plants and the fact that a nuclear bomb requires the explosion to trigger the splitting of the atoms, I amy be wrong but I do not think that the fuel alone without a reaction is enough to release radiation sufficient to kill even the poor guy with the geiger counter.

Also, the russians and muslims not getting along, Jesus Christ who cares, we are blowing up the US, city by city.

The VP is taking such a ridiculous position that it has become unbelivable. I know we all harp on the suspension of reality- but one of the things that made the show feel real was you could believe this stuff would happen. Now you have the VP ordering nuclear subs into launch mode-- come on???!!! He's an ass.

I don't care for Doyle. He's a bad ass for the purpose of being a bad ass. I thought Jack was going to mess up the assault on the house thereby setting up a nice conflict between him and doyle-- but Jack rarely messes up.

Question- what happened to the grenade thrown by the drone pilot operator-- you saw it didn't you? It didn't go off.

Audrey is so alive its not even funny. There's not a doubt in my mind. In fact, I thought Jack was going to notice something when he was reviewing the file that convinced him that she is alive.

Graem's wife making moves on Jack hours after her husband has been killed-- now that's funny.

Where is her son though-- we don't know. And we don't know where Jack's father is.

He might be the thread holding this together but that might be too obvious. they might introduce a new character who we haven't met who is working with the Dad. We'll see.

Finally-- good call by Ted on the best line of the night-- Jack finding the Chinese who hurt Audrey. Awesome stuff-- reminded me of Rambo talking into the microphone, "Murdock, I'm coming to get you!!!".

China is now on alert!!!

Finally- can we have more references to the un-named country in the Mid-East? Norhtern border, "they" "their"- come on-- just make it up-- call it Quirkistan or something...

Getting close to nuclear material is enough to get sick, and even die.

"Dirty bombs" use an explosive in order to disperse the material over a wide area, so as to increase its effecct.

The explosion needed in actual bombs is to send the neutrons into the atoms, which causes the chain reaction.

There is no "nuclear steam" emitted from power plants. The steam you see is the result of the rods being cooled by water. The water molecules do not "pick up" any radioactive porperties.

I thought that 24, the movie might be in China. I think that the rest of the season will be setting us up for that.

Mitch - AGREED!!! Just name the heretofore un-named country! Why is it fine to have "Russian" bad guys when all middle-eastern bad guys have to hail from "anonymousistan"?

The pin was still in the grenade. Happy they took the trouble to get an RGD-5 Grenade. More bonus points!!!

Audrey is alive. No question about that.

Graem's wife hitting on Jack was just plain silly. I mean, not only did her husband JUST DIE, but, according to her point of view, it was Jack who killed him. Plainly wrong.

Still, I think the brief time they were on the pier should allow them to all survive. My position is that is not very serious.

Who was the director of CTU in Season 1 and 2? He died from radiation poisoning-- remember. He wanted to be the hero and crash the helicopter into the moutnain with the device. He was exposed to radiation. I think it would do some very serious damage.

Back to Graem's wife-- she found out that Jack's dad killed Graem-- recall he told her on the call when he took her son. So from her point of view- she knows that Jack didn't kill her husband.

Can you imagine Thasnkgiving at the Bauer house? My guess is Jack gets the drum stick.

Thanksgiving at the Bauer house... a lot of silence with an occasional throat clearing... at the end the perfuntory "this was great, see you again next year."

I did not remember the scene where Jack told her that his dad did it. It should have happened though, so, I withdraw my objection.

Ted, yes, you are right in that the couple of minutes of exposure on the dock should not be enough to kill people. I really do not know why they are standing around.

John-

When Milo was in the field with Marilyn when they were going to see Gredenko- there was an explosion. Milo got hurt. Jack ran to find Marilyn and pinned her against the wall. He was yelling at her that she set him up. That's when she told him that his father had called her telling her that he kidnapped the son, killed Graem and would do the same to the son if she didn't cooperate with him.

You remember it.

George was the poor sucker who died of radiation exposure in season two, but he was in the warehouse behind the sealed chamber when the bullets broke open the container releasing the plutonium and he breathed it in deeply, that will get you every time.

Graem please pass the gravy, Graem, the gravy, please.

Jack stands up, pins Graem to the back of his chair, "There isn't enough time, the gravy is getting cold, don't you understand I will do whatever I need to do to ensure hot gravy on my Turkey and mashed potatoes."

Mitch - I remember the scene now. I watched that episode with one eye on the tv and my daughter on the computer with the other eye.

More from Thanksgiving:

The gravy will begin to lose critical temperature and form a skin in less than five minutes... THERE IS NO TIME!!!!

With respect to the whole thing about the drone "stalling" it was utter nonesense.

"Stalling" an aircraft is what happens when the "angle of attack" of the wing is too great and the air flowing under the wing acts as a brake and ceases to provide lift. This happens when you "pull up" too fast in relation to your forward velocity. It is a function of the pitch of the aircraft.

While I guess a stall can occur if you pull into a turn too hard (because you are changing the roll and the pitch), you would REALLY have to pull on the stick in an obnoxious manner. Even if it did stall, the only thing that happens when a stall occurs is that the wing loses lift, and, "falls" back to the angle of attack that gives it lift.

The first time I was up in a Cessna, the guy I was flying with told me to pull back the stick as hard as I could. When I did so, the wings stalled and the plane began to fall. He let a "OH MY GOD!!!" scream which almost made me crap my pants, but, one second later, the plane righted itself and he had a nice laugh at my expense.

The stalling thing was a false way to create tension.

When Jack was looking at the file on Audrey, and looked at the photo with the arm sticking out (the second photo we saw), I half expected to see a tattoo on the wrist that would tip Jack off.

Don't lie John, you did the Bugs Bunny move in the cartoon with the Gremlin. You started screaming like a girl!

Tim, If the stall had lasted for more than one second, I might have screamed like a girl. However, since the plane was only stalled long enough for my trusted companion in the left seat to exclaim "OH MY GOD!!!" and me have my entire body have an electric shock go through it, I guess we will never know.

Tim- that's the point I was trying to make-- I thought reviewing the photos would have tipped Jack off that the person in the photos was not Audrey.
